As 2009 nine closes out, I'll leave it to my boy SKILLZ to send it out with style as usual.

MOS DEF "Ecstatic" from nabil elderkin on Vimeo.
Title track from The Ecstatic. This is in my top 5 albums of 2009. List being compiled as I watch this. So good to see the boogieman make a comeback this year. He seems hungry again musically. He made me wondering for a while, with the handful of sloppy shows and schizophrenic releases I've encountered the past few years. But Mos is back in a big way in 2009. Couldn't be happier.Ski feat. Mos Def-Taxi from Creative Control on Vimeo.
Video of Black Dante and Ski Beatz working on a cut for Ski's upcoming production album. If you didn't already know, ski was an integral part of some of my personal favorite hip hop records of all time: Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt ("Dead Presidents," "22 Two's", "Politics as Usual," and "Feelin' It") as well as producing Camp Lo's classic Uptown Saturday Night in it's entirity. This might be one of my top albums of 2010. We'll just have to wait and find out.

My partner in crime DJ Swervewon put together a nice little mix of some of the acts that will be gracing the stage at the Crocodile for GO! MACHINE this weekend. Peep the mix below and be sure to cop those 2 day passes.1. Victim Of The Modern Age- Champagne Champagne feat. Fences
2. Gangsta - Fatal Lucciauno
3. Love In A Strange World- Mad Rad
4. You're On - P Smoov feat. Grynch
5. I Just Wanna Beat- The Physics
6. This Is That Fire- Spaceman
7. Snow Motion (For Tyrone)- Thee Satisfaction
8. Rainwater- Hella Dope
9. And We Danced- Macklemore
10. Meth Heads (File Jerks Remix)- They Live
11. Bedroom- Fresh Espresso
12. Fast Rap- Katie Kate

So my favorite artist of 2009 is none other than Dam-Funk. This is probably not all that surprising to those that know me and my musical tastes, but something about this record just puts me in the best mood. Those raw synths and classic drum hits are like the musical equivalent to a fat blunt. No matter how bad your day is, one hit and you feel better in no time. All sweeping full length instrumentals that epitomize what the great Roger Troutman said on his first funk single back in the mid-80s: More Bounce to the Ounce.
You can now pre order the 5lp collectors set of Toeachizown, Dam-Funk's magnum funk opus at Stones Throw Online. It was delayed for production reasons but should be shipping out early 2010. The packaging is just nasty. I'm broke, but I might have to find a way to cop this.
