I have been slowly scaling back my sneaker obsession, and am probably going to start downsizing. The poetry contained in the song itself is enough to make you take a step back and realize just how ridiculous consumerism can be. Dope kicks are dope kicks, but seeing people suffering around the world while my closet is full of shoe boxes is starting to weigh on me.

So I recently got back from a trip and had the pleasure of having Oddisee's newest release, Traveling Man, in my iPod. All I can say is this is one of the most creative and audibly stunning instrumental projects I have ever listened to or even heard about.

Nite Funk is a collaboration between future funk maestro Dam-Funk and songstress Nite Jewel that was brought to fruition for an ongoing XLR8R series called Tune in an afternoon. Apparently they recruit two LA based artist and find a way to get them to create a song in one day. It's great to know that such a kick ass idea can yield an equally kick ass song. Some straight up baby making music.

Who knows if a full length album could spring from this, but as it stands right now my guy Dam-Funk can do no wrong.

Dam That's Funky

So my favorite artist of 2009 is none other than Dam-Funk. This is probably not all that surprising to those that know me and my musical tastes, but something about this record just puts me in the best mood. Those raw synths and classic drum hits are like the musical equivalent to a fat blunt. No matter how bad your day is, one hit and you feel better in no time. All sweeping full length instrumentals that epitomize what the great Roger Troutman said on his first funk single back in the mid-80s: More Bounce to the Ounce.

With that being said, Mr. Funk hit his twitter followers yesterday with 5 unreleased gems that he had in the vaults. They are all pretty unique, and one is even a ripped grimy tape recording from 1991. This guy can do no wrong, and I can't wait for him to bring his live set to Seattle.

Rapper/singer Jerm teams up with soon to be super-producer/rapper TaySean to produce some of the dopest (hence the name) cuts that the greater King County area has ever seen. Equal parts West Coast bounce, Detroit groove, and Northwest fresh, with a little space dust sprinkled in the mix... they have a unique vibe that is perfect party music for any day of the week.

This time of year is all about looking within yourself. A time when we brush aside the day to day hustle, bustle and grind of life in the 21st century to take a deep breath and do some serious soul searching. Instead of concentrating on everything we need, or how everything should be, concentrate on what we have and how fortunate we really are.

This year I am feeling considerably more thankful than I have in the past. I'm reaching the end of what I would consider a successful year, and even though things could always be better the good has outweighed the bad. I did lose my Grandmother and have had some other painful moments that have tested me in various ways, but when I look at the big picture I am incredibly fortunate. I could list all the things I am thankful for, but that would be long winded and boring to read. What I will do is tell you what I am most thankful for. Being that this is a music blog first and everything else second, I would like to give thanks to the one constant I have had in my life since my first memory. The one thing in this world that supplies me with endless enjoyment, reflection, productivity, therapy, creativity and an income. I would like to give thanks to music and reflect on just how lucky I am that my life revolves around it, and that I have been welcomed into what I consider a huge family of incredibly talented people in the best music city in the world.

Music is my life. I can't find any other way to put it. Whether I am listening to it, creating it, playing it to large groups of people for money, buying it or pirating it, it is always on my mind. I am surrounded by it. It is my religion. I find God on a daily basis when I push the play button or get my hand stamped at a venue. I pray at the alter of the beat and beat will always save us. Music does not judge. Music does not force interpretation. Music does not think in absolutes. Music is not black or white. Music is the ultimate gray area. It taps into that part of the brain that is not mapped, the last undiscovered frontier. It has such a direct correlation to mood, feelings, energy and affects your state of being in such a way, it makes you feel more human. More alive.

The fact that my life and existence can be summed up in one word can be viewed as an accomplishment in my book. I found something I was good at and loved doing and stuck with it. So many people hate what they do, or live such cut and dry repetitive daily lives that they become numb to the simple things that make life worth living. I remember years ago going to see my dad's acupuncturist and she told that my aura radiated music. She asked if I did anything that related to music and I told her that because of my love of music I was considering becoming a dj (it was a long time ago). I was kind of shocked that she could tell me that since she never met me before, but it just flowed out of me at the time. Since then, what was once a stream has become a raging river. So, I am incredibly thankful that I have such a connection to it, have it as an outlet, and use it as a form of natural drug. I mean creating a beat or rocking a crowd gives me such a natural high that borders on orgasmic at times. It's hard to explain to those that don't get it immediately. Some understand. Some will not.

All that being said, I am incredibly fortunate to be in my position and be doing what I love in such an amazing city. Fuck what you heard. Seattle is the musical capital of the world. There are so many creative people in this town and we are reaching a point where supporting each other and friendly competition are replacing the old guard of jealousy, conflict, disconnectedness and downright "hating." The cream is rising to the top right now and it is such an amazing thing to be a part of. We have tried to bring artists together with our weekly Jet Set night on Mondays and Members Only functions once a month, and as it stands right now I think we have succeeded far beyond our wildest dreams.

Seattle is on the verge of something special. I can't really tell you exactly what, but everyone can feel it. I sense that we will all be telling our grandkids about the summer of 2009 and when everything began to fall into place. To be here at this point and time. To be a member of an amazing music scene. To be an active part of this golden age that we are embarking upon really puts things into perspective for me. Throughout all the bumps and bruises and rough patches, I can look at myself in the mirror and feel like I am where exactly where I should be, doing exactly what I need to be doing.

And for that I am thankful.

I am madly in love with both of them and not ashamed to say so at all.

THE WAR ROOM: In Memoriam

Kind of strange to see such a high profile bar go down right when we elect a brand spankin new nightlife friendly mayor AND city attorney, but I'm not close to the situation so I'll let co-owner Marcus Lalario tell it like it is.

"With so many issues still facing nightlife, we're ready to move on. The liquor tax increase, mounting pressures from the City and State helped us make the decision...We feel like we've had a good run at it."

A good run at it? Man I went "N" at the War Room. 2080's back when Scene was still in town. Yo Son! and the sweat box that was the Red Bull Big Tune Battles. Spinnin the rooftop on summer weekends. Jake One's record release party. Cancer Rising's debut album release party...where I first met Macklemore and Larry. And so many more nights. It was a fun spot and the place to be more often than not.

It will be missed and I hope this doesn't become a trend. Washington has some of the WORST liquor laws and restrictions in the US and they keep raising 'sin' taxes and making it harder and harder for the places I frequent and spin at to stay afloat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that calmer waters are ahead with the recent election results, but damn this one is gonna sting for a while.

Although the groups release was shrouded in secrecy, it is now known that it is a Seattle based side project of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler; we've Also come to find out the group consists of Tendai and Silk as well. Raheem DeVaughn - Bulletproof (feat. Ludacris)

A great song deserves a great video and this companion to Raheem DeVaugn's single "Bulletproof," off his upcoming debut album The Love & War MasterPeace, is more than worthy. I stumbled upon it watching VH1 Soul earlier tonight and it gave me chills. It's nice to see someone take the natural combination of music and message back to where soul was in the 60s and 70s, but use today's mediums to make an even bigger emotional impact. A music video that calls upon the audience to...God forbid...think.

The message is important. The song is reminiscent of some vintage Curtis Mayfield. Luda is the prefect example of a featured artist, playing a finely tuned second fiddle to a song already has enough parts to be successful. And the video ties it all together. Bravo.

It's A Celebration Bitches

2009 is the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Reebok Pump.

I must say I am a fiend for all things swoosh, but I do have a pair of pumps and they are possibly the most comfortable sneaks I own. I have always been a fan of the look and fit of the pumps, but one thing Reebok does not do well is colorways. These simple black/white/orange kicks are super filthy, yet for some reason Reebok sticks to easter pastel and neon themes that make me want to pump my eyes straight out of my face.

Hey Reebok, stick to simple colorways and classic retros and I (along with lots of other sneaker heads) will buy them. Kthx

I like Kanye and even though he can be a huge self absorbed prick, you have to admit this guy has had a rough year. Let's hope this is the start of 'Ye really getting his shit together and dealing with some of those problems. You can tell by this video that he wants to.

Ok, so Hov officially MURDERED it at the Key last night. The crowd was in a frenzy even before he took the stage, and when the countdown hit zero the chants of "Hova! Hova! Hova!" were deafening. When he finally rose up from under the stage...pure insanity. He knew that it had been too long since he had been in the great NW and immediately declared "This is gonna be a special one tonight!" with a grin from ear to ear.

He laced the crowd with classics and new joints for over an hour and a half and every paying customer got their money's worth to the penny. He jumped off with "Run this Town" and went straight into "DOA." The live band came through perfectly on these cuts and the whole stage show was really quite simple but executed perfectly. The towering video screens had some real stunning visuals, especially during "Empire State of Mind" when it turned into the New York city skyline.

He went through classics from BP1 like "HOVA" and "Ain't No Love," Vol. 2 "Can I Get A" and "Hard Knock Life," Vol. 3 "Big Pimpin" and the Black Album "PSA" "Lucifer" and "Encore." That is just scratching the surface.

Suprisingly, some of my favorite performances were from BP3. I am not the biggest fan of this record in it's entirety, but 50% of it is damn good listening and he picked the choice ones. "Empire State of Mind" "Already Home" "Thank You" and especially "On to the Next One" seriously brought the crowd to a whole nother stratosphere and I was going dummy. Swizz Beatz is a fool for that one.

The show was such a great experience 'cause I have never seen Jay, and this was his first time back in Seattle in 10 years. Not to mention he is the greatest living wordsmith and has a catalog that would have allowed him to perform hits well into next week. He was flawless on the mic. His set list was perfect (besides not having a single song from American Gangster). The band added a great element and didn't overdo the instrumentals. The video screen was original and complimented his set perfectly. And the final element that really brought it all together was the vibe in the building. It was ALL LOVE. The crowd was into it from minute one and didn't stop screaming or put their diamonds down for the entire show.

Cheers to Hova for putting on a very memorable performance that was equal parts entertainment and pure musicianship. ON TO THE NEXT ONE!

RIP to a local hip hop historian, truth speaker and lover of this music. We miss you and will always remember your passion, opinions and beliefs. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I got to know TalkSick over the past few years in the Seattle hip hop scene. No one was more educated in the art of hip hop than this man. He knew every word to every golden era joint I would drop, and we would go on and on about hip hop music, where it has been and where it is going. We didn't always see eye to eye, because he was a self proclaimed hip hop dinosaur, but he always spoke his mind and that is something this world needs more of. You were a valuable addition to the scene and culture, and a great friend.

Confirmation was just announced on the death of the McFly NFW Hypermax. Universal unhappy that they were not official licensees, and were simply an unofficial inspiration for the shoe, has pulled the plug on the whole model. I assume this is just about some money, and will get solved soon, but if not it will be a shame to see such a cool looking shoe never see the light of day.

So a good friend of mine Desmond Marzette is one of the heads of the Lebron account and many others for the advertising firm Wieden & Kennedy down in PDX. W&K have handled all of Nike's advertising since the mid 80's and helped establish them as the sneak giant they are today. Needless to say, they make quality ads that range from inspirational to hilarious and they all make you want to purchase sneakers whether you need them or not.

Well, Dez was the mind behind many of Nike's latest and greatest Lebron TV spots and he also wrote the Kobe vs. Lebron 'Little Dez' commercial. (See Below)

The charecter Lil Dez is of course inspired by and named after him and I thought that was such a great look, since he has done some great work for (in turn lining the pockets of) the company and King James. Well it turns out, my dude just got a shoe and t-shirt package put out honoring him.

This might be the coolest thing ever.

Also, check out some of the commercials that Dez and the team down at W&K have put together over the last few seasons. Don't front...my dude earned this recognition. He's put in serious work.

Continuing my spotlight on 'swoosh-less' sneaks, I give you the Greedy Genius 'Ocean Runner.' Part boat shoe and part sneaker, this hi-top has a classy, yet functional look that not many sneakers possess. I'm really feeling the boat shoe touch with the crossed up laces on the ankle and single lace near the sole. Plus, the navy blue and black colorway is a perfect example of stylish simplicity. This colorway should hopefully be dropping sometime in the fall or holiday season.

On a hot and sweaty Saturday night (Sunday early morning) a secretive gathering took place involving an elite group of individuals from all creative corners of Seattle's chapter of the society of hip hopping. The gathering place was the Black Lodge, an ode to one of the greatest television series of all time...and what went down might be one of the best off the radar hip hop shows this town has ever seen.

The initiation began with a set from Kung Fu Grip, an up and coming group of members in training, that showed great potential for such young understudies. The next stage brought out State of the Artist, a great local addition that came out strong with some serious heat (literally, it was very hot in there). Then came the fresh2def stateswomen of the Seattle chapter, Thee Satisfaction. They took the initiates on a ride to the moon and back, bouncing along synthy space jams like they were born on planet dope. When they were joined by Pearl Dragon of Champagne Champagne for their rendition of the already classic 'Magnetic Blackness' the booster engines hit full throttle and and the place exploded. Finally, the initiates were ready for their ultimate test.

When Rik Rude and P Smoov, with synth in tow, took the stage everyone could tell local music history was about to be made. Fresh Espresso came out with Diamond Pistols in hand and blasted the crowd with hit after hit from their newly released gem of an album, Glamour. The sweaty, drunken, hyped and highly caffeinated crowd drank every drop of the freshly brewed local superior blend these two were cooking up. Members in the front row could be seen casually passing around a bottle of bottom shelf tequila and yelling every word in between swigs and the stink faces that followed. "You want some, come get some. I'm right here! I'M RIGHT HERE!" By the end of the set, when P Smoov took the helm of his synth and provided a solo introduction into their magnus opus 'Lazerbeams' the place was boiling over. The sweat drenched duo had done it again, and knew the moment they left the stage...that was something special.

The night wasn't over yet... as Terry Radjaw, Swervewon and myself kept people drinking and dancing until 4am. People were rocking out to nonstop hip hop classics and I believe a prominent member of the local media (ahem...Larry) even busted out the running man when Motown Philly dropped over the PA.

Backstage in the vip members lounge, cyphers broke out over makeshift drums, beer bottle percussion, hand claps and foot stomps. Bottles, blunts and fist bumps were passed around...smiles were seen everywhere you looked. Members Only brought the elite members of the Seattle chapter together in a way that hadn't been done in years, and the initiates were blessed with one hell of a show.

The Brazil Issue

The newest issue of the best magazine the world has ever seen features a long overdue dedication to one of my favorite countries, musically speaking. Brazil.

Brazil has produced some of the most original, funkiest and dancable music that has ever entered my eardrums, yet has wholeheartedly refused to sell out it roots. Every new genre it produces or adopts (Samba, Bossa Nova, Kumbia, ect) has a very native Brazilian feel and jive to it. It is such a loving sound. Lovers of fun, sun, parties, beautiful women, bikinis, and all things deemed exotic and tropical...their music is full of the love of life.

The "Brazil Issue" features Gilberto Gil & Airto Moreira as coverboys and should be required reading for all lovers of music.

Stevie Wonder's MJ Talkbox Tribute

Stevie does a touching tribute to Michael Jackson the night after his death at his concert in Kansas City.

He is one of the last great soul and funk musicians of that era. I will be listening and enjoying his music in the coming days, weeks and months because I sure as hell enjoyed listening to and rediscovering much of the MJ discography these past few days...

With all of these great talents dropping like flies the past few years, I am truly thankful that I was able to see Stevie Wonder live at White River Amphitheater last July. One of the highlights of my music loving life.

Might as well give thanks and soak it up while they're still here people.

Some people see this as a 'turning point' in contemporary hip hop music. Some see this as a return to the good ol days. Some people see this as a declaration of war against 'ringtone rap.'

It may be all or none of those things...I see it as a good track, with a GREAT beat. No ID is one of the best at taking simple samples, adding some grimey drums that require a visit to the chiropractor upon first listen, and creating a Frankenstein slapper of epic proportions. Enjoy.
